Dr James H Butler Jr
Dr Butler is the Managing Director and a founding Director of Tri-Star.
He has more than 30 years of oil and gas exploration and production experience in many countries, including the USA, Australia, India and China.
Dr Butler is a graduate of the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Accounting. He has a Master of Professional Accounting from the University of Texas Austin and is also an alumnus of the University of Texas Permian Basin, where he received his Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Geology, and Master of Business Administration.
Dr Butler completed a Doctorate in Coal Geology from the Queensland University of Technology.

James H Butler
James Butler is the Exploration Manager and has worked for Tri-Star for 11 years. Since 2008 he has coordinated exploration drilling and geophysical programs across Tri-Star’s acreage in the Northern Territory, South Australia, Queensland, and West Texas.
He holds a Bachelor of Science, Geology, from the University of Washington, and has experience in oil, gas, coal, copper, and gold exploration in both Australia and the USA.
James has experience in regulatory, contractor, and joint venture negotiations. His technical skills include sub-surface and reservoir mapping and coal reservoir evaluation.
US Corporate Counsel
Anne Butler is Tri-Star’s US Corporate Counsel.
Anne graduated summa cum laude from Tulane University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Management and a dual major in Asian Studies with a focus in Mandarin.
She earned a Juris Doctor from Tulane University Law School in 2013 and was admitted to the State Bar of Texas shortly thereafter.
During law school Anne was the President of the Business Law Society and her case note was selected for publication by the Tulane Journal of International and Comparative Law. She also clerked for the Attorney General of Texas in the Environmental and Administrative Law Division.
Government & Public Affairs Manager
Catherine is Tri-Star’s Government & Public Affairs Manager. Her responsibilities cover industry, community and government relations.
Catherine worked at Tri-Star for two years in a Business Development role prior to completing her Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Houston, with a Minor in Spanish Language.
She has experience in landholder, government and regulatory engagement, and is dedicated to maintaining Tri-Star’s social license in the communities in which it operates.
Country Manager, Australia
Andrew was appointed to the position of Executive Vice President, Australia in 2018. Andrew is responsible for managing Tri-Star’s Australian day to day operations and positioning the company’s business strategy to achieve diversity and growth in the market,
Prior to joining Tri-Star, Andrew was an executive at Santos for over 8 years, where he held leadership roles with responsibility for commercial, joint venture management, business development, commercial operations, economics and strategy and third-party gas.
Earlier in his career, Andrew was an investment banker with Macquarie Bank and a lawyer with top-tier law firm Allens.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) and a Bachelor of Laws from the Queensland University of Technology, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance & Investment (Corporate Finance) from the Securities Institute of Australia and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
